Factors to Consider when choosing a Yard Ramp

Yard ramps use forklift to load and unload cargo from loading docks, truck trailers, platforms, rail cars, etc. yard ramps are made of steel, they have a weight capacity of between 16,000 lbs and 30,000 lbs, they also have wheels for mobility and setup [that allows it to be moved with a forklift]. Yard ramps also have a mechanism that allows it to raise and lower the loading surface.

Just like the standard loading dock, some yard ramps can be permanently set up as with stationary stands to allow the trucks to back up to them, while some may include hard rails that allow them to be used as walk ramps into and out of the truck trailers.

Below are some of the factors that you should consider when you want to buy a yard ramp.

1. Determine your minimum weight capacity

Calculating your minimum weight capacity can be quite challenging if you have varying load weights and multiple shifts. However, this is a critical part of making sure that the yard ramp will be able to carry out the task. The low end of the ramp’s weight capacity ought to start at three times the weight of your heaviest forklift or the weight of the heaviest forklift combined with the expected weight of the heaviest cargo. Anything that goes above this will be ideal for your needs.

2. Determine which type of ramp you need: stationary or portable ramp

If you want to create access from a loading dock to the ground, a stationary ramp is the excellent choice since it will stay in place and be moved by forklift when necessary. On the other hand, if you need to load or unload a semi-trailer without a loading dock, choose a portable/mobile yard ramp because it is easier to maneuver into position or move from one truck to another. The portable or mobile ramps usually have hydraulic lifts to accommodate various heights.

3. Determine the width of your widest equipment and cargo

For you to ensure that the forklift drivers have some leeway, your ramp should measure at least 15’’ wider than your widest expected cargo or piece of equipment. If you intend to use a yard ramp on a rail car, you should measure the car door opening to ensure that the ramp will fit perfectly and is wide enough to prevent the forklift from hitting the curbs.

4. Ask yourself if you need a ramp with a “level off” feature

When you want to load up a truck from the ground, a ramp which has a level-off at the top is excellent because it allows the forklift to level off before it can enter into the truck. If a ramp doesn’t have a level-off, it can make your load to enter at an angle that can makes it hard to place.

· Conclusion

Now that you know some of the crucial factors to consider when choosing a yard ramp, getting the right one that will suit your needs is not a difficult task. Again, remember to practice safety rules when using the yard ramp. For instance, make sure that the truck trailer is stopped when you are loading or unloading, the wheels are chocked, and the safety chains are attached before using the ramp.
